The EOS Culture Checkup™ is a super-powerful tool that gives leaders insights into the company culture they’ve created. If you care about company culture, you should find out where your business sits on the Culture Checkup™ quadrant.
Creating a great company culture makes it so your workdays don’t stink. Plus, there are tangible benefits to having a strong company culture. If you ever need to convince your fellow leaders to invest in culture, point to your bottom line 🤑
Great culture boosts performance
Gartner research shows that strengthening company culture can boost employee performance by 22%. Organizations with performance-centric cultures consistently experience better financial growth compared to those with weaker or misaligned cultures.
Plus, we all know that employee attrition is expensive — that’s why employee engagement is so dang important (and we’re a BIT obsessed with it). Companies with great culture have up to 72% higher engagement — and those highly engaged teams achieve 21% greater profitability. Building a great culture pays off, literally!
How a Culture Checkup Helps
The EOS Culture Checkup™ is one of our favorite culture-focused tools for a few reasons.
1. Get insights from data, not vibes.
While we’re big fans of checking the vibes (hence the Vibe Check employee engagement survey in Strety), when you’re talking about culture, you’re looking at something both general (how the culture is overall) and specific (which areas of your culture are strong or problematic).
Traditional approaches to gathering info about company culture include quarterly, annual, or downright inconsistent surveys that don’t tie into your business otherwise. Maybe you know you have a morale problem, so you shoot out a random survey to see if you can figure out why. Maybe you rely on exit interviews. All of these methods lack intention and none of them will give you reliable insights.
Because the EOS Culture Checkup is a monthly survey with detailed questions, it helps you get to the heart of your culture right now. This gives you real-time data you can actually rely on to make informed decisions.
2. See patterns for better predictability.
The great thing about consistently collecting your culture data? (Other than a fun tongue twister.)
Patterns!
You can identify recurring themes through your Cultural Checkup. You’ll see if issues go beyond one less-than-stellar month. And you’ll notice immediately if you do have those dips, which will help you get back on track more quickly.
You can also compare your culture data to your business outcomes — if you notice that an improved culture is correlated to better customer experience, for example, you’ll have even more fuel to energize your culture improvement initiatives.
3. Set clear improvement goals.
Getting granular about where your culture triumphs and struggles is the best way to create SMART goals around improvement. The EOS Culture Checkup™ helps you quickly identify the most impactful areas where you can make changes.
For example, maybe you notice for two months in a row that you’re getting low ratings around whether your company has clear processes. To rectify this, you can make Rocks for members of your senior leadership team to create Playbooks for the processes they’re responsible for. They can assign those Playbooks as reading to their teams, and also ask team members to suggest ways to improve the Playbooks. Winning is a team effort, after all!
When you create and execute on goals that tangibly connect to your employee experience, you’re showing your employees that you really care about company culture, instead of just playing lip service to the concept. This is an excellent way to embody authentic leadership!
How to Do an EOS Culture Checkup
EOS Worldwide generously offers many EOS tools for free on their website, and the Culture Checkup™ is one of them. You can grab the free Culture Checkup™ download from EOS Worldwide, and use it to perform a culture checkup in your business now.
Once you’re ready with the questions, figure out how to collect your answers. If you’re not using Strety for your Culture Checkup™, there are a couple other options to collect answers. You could do it manually, which would entail sending the Culture Checkup™ to everyone and tabulating their answers. This may seem easier at first, but tabulation will be pretty time consuming.
It might be a bit easier to create a Google form of the Culture Checkup™. You’ll have to input each question, but at least you’ll have your answers ready to organize in spreadsheet form.
Once you have your answers, score them out to find out where your culture lands on the “intentional” and “healthy” spectrum, so you can start finding ways to improve.
Keep your eye on the prize
However you decide to perform your Culture Checkup™, the most important part is getting it done. Let your employees know that answering honestly helps you work toward a better culture on their behalf, and how important it is to you that you’re creating a great place to work.
And once you start, don’t rest on your laurels! Things and people fluctuate in business, so you should always keep an eye on how things are going. If you’re a Strety user, you can use the Culture Checkup™ plus other helpful engagement surveys to keep your finger on the pulse.
